Ear Mites
Ear mites are
insects that are too small to see with the naked
eye. If the condition goes untreated, ear mites
may cause a secondary infection that must also be
treated. Ear mites are transmitted by direct contact
between your animal and another infected animal.
At
the Ozaukee Humane Society, we use Revolution, which
is a topical treatment for ear mites. There may
still be some residual debris in the ears, but further
treatment should not be necessary. If you suspect
your cat may have ear mites, it is advised that
your veterinarian check your companion animals'
ears.
Prevention
.
Keep your animal away from other animals that have
ear mites.
Symptoms
. Vigorous
shaking, scratching or rubbing of the affected ear.
. A thick
black crust formed in the ear canal of the animal.
Treatment
. The animal
should be immediately isolated from other animals until
completion of the treatment.
. Your
veterinarian should recommend the appropriate treatment
since many forms of treatment can be effective.
