Senior Dog Adopted by Octogenarian

GRAFTON, Wis. — It was truly a cosmic connection. Albert Radke of Jackson came to the Ozaukee Humane Society in search of an older dog who needed a loving retirement home. Albert, 81 years old, appreciated the maturity and wisdom of senior canines, and knew he could provide a caring home for a homeless dog. Albert had owned collies for most of his life and missed the friendship of an animal companion.

Haley, a 10-year old Beagle/Poodle mix, was waiting for just the right person to see past her age and into her loving heart. She had been at the shelter a while and watched as the younger pups found perfect families that matched their energy levels. Although the staff was kind and affectionate, she longed to sprawl out on the floor next to a new guardian who was gentle and patient.

In walked Albert Radke. Haley immediately caught Albert's eye at the shelter and the pair made an instant connection! OHS staff recognized that this adoption was meant to be. No two friends could have been more perfect for each other. Albert became the proud guardian of Haley last weekend and she will undoubtedly live out her years in a loving home.

The Ozaukee Humane Society encourages people who have room and plenty of love in their hearts to adopt a senior companion animal and give them the best gift ever – a new home. Senior companion animals have several positive qualities that a younger furry friend has not yet developed, including patience, wisdom and a more relaxed attitude.
