NO Cats at Ozaukee Humane Society Infected by Deadly Virus
Several cats at one area shelter have fallen ill due to a mutant strain of the Feline Calicivirus. However, the Ozaukee Humane Society has seen no cases of the mutated virus in any of their feline guests. OHS regularly vaccinates against the traditional Calicivirus and has taken precautions to prevent transmission of the mutated virus to cats at the shelter.
The OHS Veterinarian suggests that cat guardians contact their own veterinarians regarding the decision to vaccinate. Your cat is virtually at no risk if he or she has been kept indoors and away from other infected cats. Your cat could contract the virus if people who come in contact with your cat have been exposed to infected cats or their environment.
More information about this particular strain of the Calicivirus can be found on the shelter medicine web site at www.sheltermedicine.com and by searching for "Virulent Systemic Feline Calicivirus" in the search box. The site includes information about the disease, vaccines and frequently asked questions.
