Going for the Gold (LEED certification, that is)

Ozaukee Humane Society launches campaign to
raise $250,000 for new shelter

Grafton, Wis. – The construction crews have begun construction of the Ozaukee Humane Society Victoria Wellens Center, and officials with the society are launching an ambitious goal for the summer: raise $250,000 to get the building closer to obtaining Gold LEED certification.

“We are hoping for 250 people or businesses in the community to each contribute $1,000 to help us get closer to Gold LEED status,” said Anne Reed, executive director of the Wisconsin Humane Society, which merged with the Ozaukee shelter five years ago.

“There are many individuals whom we know just haven’t yet made their donation, and this is a great time to contribute,” Reed said. “There are still permanent naming opportunities available to recognize donors. Donations of all levels are welcome and deeply appreciated.”

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System is a certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings, according to the US Green Building Council. The new animal shelter in Saukville is expected to be at least Silver-certified, but additional green features could still be implemented to qualify the shelter for Gold status.

"The LEED Gold rating reflects a higher standard of commitment to sustainable design than with typical construction," said Allen Washatko of The Kubala Washatko Architects, the firm designing the Victoria Wellens Center. "Our goal is to help the Humane Society create a highly energy efficient, more environmentally responsible facility that reduces long-term energy and water use costs for the organization."

“We have raised the majority of the funds for the new building, said Angela Speed, director of development and community relations at WHS, “but the Going for the Gold campaign to raise $250,000 will allow us implement more green features that will help ensure the sustainability of the building. As leaders of our community who advocate for treating animals with respect and kindness, it is also integral to our mission to be good stewards of our environment. Achieving Gold certification is not just symbolic, it is reflective of our goal to limit the footprint we have on the earth.”
